Problem in importing/uploading shape files generated by CloudCompare to QGIS and Google Earth

Post by Shizuma »

I have troubles in importing / uploading Shape files generated by CloudCompare v2.12.2 (CC) onto GoogleEarth and QGIS2.18.27.

What I intend to do is to upload the contour lines generated through "Tools->Projection->Rasterize" to the said software.

To generate the contour lines, I uploaded both .las and .laz files of the images of the land I want to draw contours on, then opened the CC plugin: CFS Filter, which did excellent job in vegetation removal, which as far as I know is the only free tool I can deploy to perform the task. I then proceeded to Rasterize the "ground points" generated by the CFS Filter to generate contour lines post vegetation removal.

I then saved the contour lines in Shape file format then tried to upload to QGIS abd Google Earth but the results are as follows:
-"QGIS" says something like "invalid data source" (original message is in Japanese) when I tried to import the file as Vector layer.
-"Google Earth" gives the prompt that says "????????????? c:/Users/.../file name" (literally it gives me the series of "?", maybe because my default Windows language is Japanese, but I'm not sure)

I came across to the below discussion but it did not really solve the issue.

Because what I ultimately wish to do through at the end of this exercise is to manipulate landscape and compare the images before and after using SketchUp, I also tried another way:
- I exported the CC generated count lines in mesh format (.obj file generated after clicking "Tools->Projections->Contour plot to mesh"), then uploaded the CC genrated.obj file to MeshLab, which allowed me to save as .3ds file that can be imported to SketchUp.

Export of the CC generated .obj file to MeshLab went just fine, but MeshLab generated .3ds file did not show any image when I imported, "SketupUp" seems to complete the import .3ds file, becauseit says something like, "Imported 3ds entity Material: 0, Node:1, Mesh:1" (in Japanese).

However the screen is left blank as if nothing happened.

I have struggled in this in the last several days with no luck and I feel really stuck.. I am a newbie in 3D drawings trying to prepare documents needed for the application to the municipal government here for land alteration.

I would very much appreciate any suggestion you may have.

What format did you use to export the contour lines in order to load them in QGis or Google Earth at the beginning? SHP files?

Can you maybe send me such a file? (admin [at] cloudcompare.org)
