New User - Using Distance Tool

Hi

I am a new user and am having trouble getting the distance tool to work for me. all the tools in the distance group are greyed out along with most of the tools.
I have imported two point clouds as .ply files as well as trying importing the same point clouds as .xyz files and it makes no difference.
I am unsure what is happening and would greatly appreciate any insight or help with the matter.

Whenever you want to use the 'Distance' tools, you have to select/highlight two 3D entities (and only two).
