Filter points by density and elevation

Post by jfulle22 »

Is there a tool in Cloud Compare which enables filtering of a point cloud based on the amount of elevation change? For example, I have a point cloud which has beach and also beach escarpment. There is very little change in the elevation of the flat beach, so I want to filter more points in this area and leave the point cloud dense where elevation change is more pronounced. Any hep is greatly appreciated and thank you for your work.

Well, you could compute the curvature or the gradient of the altitudes (converting the Z coordinate to a scalar field first). Then you can use the option to subsample the cloud based on the values of a scalar field. See https://www.cloudcompare.org/doc/wiki/i ... 8option.29

But clearly it's not super easy...
