Error window: OpenGL 2.1 needed - I have 4.6

Post by 3d-labor »

Cloud Compare doesn´t start and brings up a message "The application needs OpenGL 2.1 at least"
Installed is OpenGL 4.6. It´s a Quadro P5000 graphics card. How can I solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Do you maybe have a GPU and a chipset on the same computer? (in which case, you should use the NVidia Control panel to force the usage of your Quadro card with CloudCompare)

Thank you for the reply. Yes, the GPU runs on the same computer. I have now used the NVidia System settings under "3d-settings". For the cloudcompare.exe I changed the "OpenGL-rendering GPU" to "Quadro P5000". Also in the Windows setting panel for the graphics performance settings I added cloudcompare.exe and changed it to "High performance GPU NVIDIA Quadro P5000".
Sadly I get the same error "The application needs OpenGL 2.1 at least"

That's very strange... Are there multiple versions of CC on this machine? Are you sure the settings are pointing to the right version?

There are indeed 12 Versions of C++ Redistibutables installed. I think, it comes with my Autodesk Products and werent properly uninstalled during updating to the newer Versions of my AutoDESK products. How can I set CloudCompare poiting to the right Version of C++ when I can´t start the program itself? And which should be the right version? Here are the folowing installed :

Microsoft C++ 2005 Redistibutable
Microsoft C++ 2005 Redistibutable (x64)
Microsoft C++ 2008 Redistibutable x64
Microsoft C++ 2008 Redistibutable x86
Microsoft C++ 2010 x64 Redistibutable
Microsoft C++ 2010 x86 Redistibutable
Microsoft C++ 2012 Redistibutable (x64)
Microsoft C++ 2012 Redistibutable (x86)
Microsoft C++ 2013 Redistibutable (x64)
Microsoft C++ 2013 Redistibutable (x86)
Microsoft C++ 2015-2019 Redistibutable (x64)
Microsoft C++ 2015-2022 Redistibutable (x86)

(I have no idea, why there are x86 versions installed on a 64bit OS)

Do you happaned to open cloud compare through a remote session (microsoft remote desktop)? Or did you logged in through rdp earlier and then connected to a local session?

What does dxdiag says about your gpu?
Did you tried to clean install your gpu driver?
Did you tried to disable integrated grapics totally through bios?
Is your monitor plugged in to the dedicated gpu? Instead of the motherboard?

What does dxdiag says about your gpu?
In the display part it says under chiptype "QUADRO P5000" for all 3 displays
In the system part it says "DirectX 12" but here is only the CPU listed "AMD Ryzen 9 5950x..."

Did you tried to clean install your gpu driver?
No, I every time install the new driver without uninstall the old driver. I do so because I have 3 Monitors on my Quadro P 5000 and have a switch in the connection of one monitor to switch to my second PC if needed. Therefore there are EDID profiles installed to prevent, that the Plug&Play feature destroy my screen configuration (icons an other). I will try a clean install.

Did you tried to disable integrated grapics totally through bios?
Sadly there is no Option for this in my ASUS UEFI Bios for my ASUS X570-PRO Motherboard. I have found that others have this issue too: After installing a graphics board the option is vanished in the BIOS

Is your monitor plugged in to the dedicated gpu? Instead of the motherboard?
The 3 Monitors are connected to the Display Port jacks of the graphics card

Thank you so much for your great patience with me. As I live in Berlin (Germany) I go to bed now (11:30 p.m.) and try a clean install of the graphics card driver tomorrow.

5950x does not have any integrated gpu, so that is why the option disappeared from the bios i suppose. So we can easily cross out that.

But if driver did not help, i'd try to skip the display switch. Just to be sure.

So you have to enable CloudCompare.exe in the NVidia Control Panel. Not the Microsoft Redistributable packages (that are shared between many applications).

Since there is only one gpu in the system and that is not a laptop. This is not needed at all. :)
