How to 'merge several scans' and 'split/cut the scan area'?

Post by ranjanarju »

Hello,

I am new in this forum. I am a Mechanical/Industrial Design Engineer from Bangladesh. Previously, I have worked for Draexlmaier Group in Germany.

Whatever, I have some scans from FARO FOCUS 3D. I need to merge the scans (created from several angles). I also need to split/cut some scan areas (for example, a cylindrical pipe in the scan). I need to prepare 3D Models in CATIA V5 based on these split/cut scan points. At last, I want to compare the 3D Models and the scan points for the deviation.

Can anyone suggest me-

01. How can I merge the several scans (from several angles, at least from three angles) in SCENE 5.3 so that the corner points/some targets remain in the same co-ordinate?

02. How to split/cut the desired scan areas, so that I can prepare the 3D Model(based on the scan points) in CATIA V5?

Thank You.

Hi and sorry for the late answer.

Not sure what to answer as Faro Scene software already do this very well (at least for the registration and cutting parts). If you don't have access to Scene you could of course do this in CC but in a kind of 'degraded' way (especially for the merging, as CC only handles the case where you want to register/merge two scans (at least in a proper way - you could merge a lot of them but in a serial way, which is not very good in general).

To segment a cloud CC has a lot of tools (manual segmentation, Cross Section tool, etc.).

And to export to Catia V5, I really don't know how you can do this.

Dear Daniel,

Thank You very much for your kind reply. For my own understanding, I want to discuss few things-

01. I have access to FARO SCENE 5.3. I can perform registration.

From your reply, I can understand (if I am not wrong) - Merging more than one scan is called 'registration', right? But is it usually called as- "Cloud to Cloud Registration (c2c)" or just "Registration" in the Laser Scanning Industry? or this term is only used for 'FARO SCENE' software? I mean, is this a tool that belongs to FARO SCENE only. Is this Merging Process termed as other name in other software?

02. What is CC? Is it a software? If so, does it also associated with it's own Hardware (I mean, Laser Scanner)? Can you provide a link of CC, please?

03. As you are saying, FARO SCENE can do 'Cutting Parts' task very well, can you send some- video tutorial links/pdf tutorials/other web links, please? I am subscribed to the FARO SCENE YouTube Channel. I also do have FARO SCENE User manual. But I cannot find the right approach/work-flow for this operation. Would you kindly help me to figure out the Detail Work-Flow of this 'Cutting Parts' process? I would be very much obliged.

Thank You.

Sorry I don't much about Scene and the FARO vocabulary. Maybe a better information source would be the 'laser scanning forum':
http://www.laserscanningforum.com/

And CC is an open-source tool for point cloud processing. We are not linked to any manufacturer. All the information and download link can be found here:

Dear Daniel,

i. Thank you very much for the link of the- laserscanningforum.com. The forum just activated my registration. Thanks.

ii. For CC/CloudCompare: I am such a fool !! I am asking about CC to you!? Man, I should have search for it more, read, and then come to you. It's a shame that I don't know anything about CC. My apologies !! I am very new in this laser-scanning/ Point-Cloud World.

Thanks for your nice support. Take Care.

With regards,
Ranjan
