Hello,
I am new to the world of Laser Scanning and Point Clouds!
Cloud Compare has been a great piece of software so far, allowing me to import and clip my data of a building.
However, I would like to overlay (tie-in) a JPEG image on top of my point cloud (the building). Is this possible within point cloud? It is a deterioration contour map of the building, so would be good to visualize the image on top of the point cloud.
Thank you for any help.
Will
Image Overlay on Cloud Compare
Re: Image Overlay on Cloud Compare
There's no easy way to do this.
You can only load a simple image, in which case it will appear 'full screen', and then change the camera parameters so that the cloud is in the right position (but this can be really hard). And to mix both you can change the image transparency (otherwise the image will always appear on top).
And to get a little more control, you can also import the image as a textured plane (see the second post of this thread: viewtopic.php?t=595).

Re: Image Overlay on Cloud Compare
Hello Daniel,
Thank you for your reply and advice. This answer is what I had feared! My point cloud building has four sides so I would be looking to place an image on each side, so that when the building is rotated the image stays on its surface. Is this possible at all with cloud compare or any other software?
Thanks again,
Will

OK......
Another question then; Is it possible to create a video of a fly-through of your model in cloud compare?

Not yet. But this one is definitely in the pipe and should be available in a a future release (maybe the next one, more probably the next next one).

Was this ever implemented? Or are there some new tricks to make alignment easier?
I just spent some time aligning a cloud viewport to match a picture (close-ish) using post-it notes and alt-tabbing. I wonder if this image overlay bit now has some alignment magic to go along with it? (click a point, click a spot on the image, do it 7 times and the viewport xyz FOV and angles mysteriously calculate)
Or some camera tricks that would 'lock' a single point in a camera view and all adjustments will keep that single point at the same spot in the screen?

Nope, sadly this feature never came to life... Funding was aborted...
