spacing of planes

Hi,
am currently a bit lost with the following problem. I have a point cloud of a natural rock outcrop with say one clearly visible joint set. These joints are obvious as planar features in the point cloud or in subsequent facets (facet plugin) or planes in point-cloud-shape-detection. I like to systematically measure/analyse the spacing of these joints parallel to their normal (or orthogonal to their strike). However, because of the random outcrop surface and because these joints are not orthogonal to the outcrop surface, they are not aligned for direct measurement. Anybody out there with an idea how to solve this issue?
cheers
