Gradient on one direction only

I'm trying to work out if its possible to create a SF showing gradient along a single axis (say Y)
I've been experimenting with dip angles and direction but I cant seem to get the results I'm expecting by creating dip-dip directions as a SF
My cloud is I beam rail running along the Y axis, but its top face is also curved along X which I want to ignore when deriving the gradient along the Y axis.
Has anyone any tips?
Thanks
