Filtering/smoothing trees

Hi all,
Very new to working with both point clouds and CloudCompare so a couple of questions...
I've downloaded some LiDAR data from the environment agency that I'm looking to use in a 3D project I'm working on. I am able to produce meshes from the data but I'm having an issue with trees, which almost appear to present almost as noise in the mesh that is generated. (Screenshot from 3DS Max attached). Don't get me wrong - I understand why this happens - the laser sometimes hits the top of the canopy, other times somewhere much below it... But;
I was wondering if there's any way to clean up the point cloud OR the mesh in CloudCompare prior to saving/exporting it? It would be super helpful to remedy this at the point cloud stage, as sorting it out in 3DS max would be very arduous (if at all possible).
I hope this makes sense, but happy to answer any questions.
Any help is much appreciated.
