import Solidworks file to CloudCompare

Hi
I'm using CloudCompare to try and compare the point cloud obtained from image processing (.ply) with the Solidworks 3D model.
I am not quite sure how realistic it is to turn CAD model to point cloud, because I have not seen it done before.
Therefore, what format can I use to convert the Solidworks file so that I can get the surfaces for comparison with point cloud.
Thank you in advance

Jessica

Hi,

Generally CAD software can convert their models to the tesselated STL format at least. Some can also hande OBJ (which is a better option but this is not mandatory).

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your reply. Solidworks can translate the file into stl format; however, there was issues opening the stl file in CC by another person previously.
It displayed the error message shown below:
[11:40:02] An error occurred while loading 'gum': Reading error (no access right?)
By the way, I’m using the version of 2.5.4.1 [Windows 64 bits].
Thank you for your help.

Jessica

Oh it looks like it's just a problem of filename. Make sure there's no special characters in both the filename and the path (you can first test with a very simple path like 'c:\temp\test.stl').
